Veloso Wins ACM SIGART Autonomous Agents Research Award
The ACM SIGART Autonomous Agents Research Award has been given to CMU Computer Science Professor Manuela Veloso. The award is given at the International Conference on Autonomous Agents and is intended to “recognize researchers in autonomous agents whose current work is an important influence on the field.” CMU has done very well with this award, with both Katia Sycara and Tuomas Sandholm being previous winners.
Manuela is one of the most productive and creative researchers in artificial intelligence. She has been particularly focused on the problem of AI planning, with applications to robotics. One of her most visible areas of impact has been robot soccer — “robosoccer” — including not only fundamental research results but also the wildly successful International RoboCup competitions. Manuela’s research has influenced legions of roboticists and AI researchers, and furthermore her work on robot soccer players has introduced thousands of children to the wonders of computer science. Her ability to inspire wonder extends also to the many undergraduate and graduate research assistants she works with.
Congratulations, Manuela! Many more awards to come…
