Carlos Guestrin Wins IJCAI “Computers and Thought Award”

News

Carlos Guestrin, a faculty member in Machine Learning, Computer Science, and Civil and Environmental Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University, is the recipient of the IJCAI’09 Computers and Thought Award, one of the most prestigious academic awards for young AI researchers.

With this award and his recent selection as one of Popular Science Magazine’s “Brilliant 10,” Carlos is firmly established as one of the today’s most important young researchers in the computing field. His research contributions have been significant, for example in developing the use of submodular functions in a range of machine learning and optimization problems. While fundamental in nature, Carlos’ work manages to find direct application in a range of important areas, spanning water and air quality sensing, environmental monitoring, furniture design, and even blog ranking.

It’s worth mentioning that Carlos is also an accomplished painter (I am the proud recipient of one of his works), rock climber, proponent of bicycling (he has been lobbying vigorously for bicycle storage in the new Gates Hillman Center), and food lover (Sue and I frequently find Carlos and his partner, Physics professor Kristina Woods, at the Point Bruegge restaurant). Just an all-around great person to have in our midst.

Congratulations, Carlos!
