I had terrible signal yesterday at the opening ceremony on my iPhone, and was unable to send text messages, nevermind upload any photos until well past the event. I wouldn’t count on making any live posts at the much larger event tomorrow.

Back after a long day. Signal strength was always good but rarely could I get a good connection. Even text messages often failed or were delayed by hours. Still, fun to try…

Bandwidth at the Inauguration?

Events, Personal

I’m in Falls Church, Virginia, for a short visit with my father and stepmother. This is a historic time to be in the Washington DC area, of course. Some very, very good people managed to provide me with tickets for the inauguration. (I’m forever grateful! I know it wasn’t easy.) As a result, I’ll be at the swearing-in ceremony tomorrow with my wife and son.

One thought I had is to use this occasion as an excuse to set up blogging from my iPhone so that I can make one or two live posts during the ceremony. This brings up, however, the question of bandwidth. There are some discussions on various mailing lists and web sites about the expected shortage of bandwidth at the inauguration. Is it appropriate behavior to do things like upload pictures or even make voice calls when there may be people who may have emergencies to deal with? I wonder. In some of inauguration information, there is the warning:

Be aware that it may be difficult to talk or send pictures from your cell phone, according to wireless companies.  Please use text messaging to send critical messages.

We’ll see how it works out.
