Wall Street Journal Says Luis von Ahn is “Squiggly”
The August 13, 2008 edition of the Wall Street Journal has a very nice article about reCAPTCHA, featuring CMU Computer Science professor Luis von Ahn. (”Web-Security Inventor Charts a Squigglier Course”, by Ethan Smith.) Of course, reCAPTCHA has been written about in major media before, and I’ve written about Luis several times on this blog. See, for example, my articles about GWAP, Luis’ many awards, and CAPTCHAs. (It’s worth noting that Luis is quick to share the credit for CAPTCHA with Manuel Blum, Luis’ colleague and PhD advisor, though the media tends to focus on Luis.)
Anyway, what is notable about this particular article is that the Wall Street Journal created one of those Hedcut-style drawings of Luis (though it appears only in the online edition — the print edition has a nice, but conventional, photograph of Luis):

I don’t know. In a way, Luis looks more thoughtful in Hedcut form than he does in real life! :-)

I’m really surprised they used a photo for the print edition - that is very unlike the WSJ to use a photo.
