Gore and Bezos to Attend CMU Commencement

News

The commencement ceremonies should be an especially interesting event for us this year. At the 11am university-wide ceremony, the keynote speaker will be Al Gore. Then, at the 1pm diploma ceremony for the School of Computer Science, we will have a special keynote speaker, Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos. As explained in an email from Dean Randy Bryant:

I am pleased to announce that, for the first time in many years, we will have a keynote speaker at the SCS Diploma Ceremony, on Sunday afternoon, May 18. That will be Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon. As you’ll see from the bio. below, Jeff has an extensive background in applied computer science (from Princeton), and the success of Amazon lies to a large extent on its sophisticated use of computer technology.

Bezos will receive an honorary doctorate, and on May 17 will speak to the graduating master’s and doctor’s candidates from the Tepper School of Business.

Somehow I have the feeling that we’ll have an unusually large number of faculty volunteering to be on the platform for this year’s ceremony…
