A Visit to UCSD

Events, Personal

I’m just finishing a visit to UCSD. Yesterday, I gave a distinguished lecture in their CS department entitled, Ten Years of Certified Code. In recent years, UCSD has been building up a very nice faculty in areas related to programming languages, program analysis, verification, and security (both systems security and language-based security). There was a very nice crowd for my talk, and the high technical level of the questions and other interactions was great. I had lots of fun and learned a lot of new things. All in all, I think there is a good “buzz” in UCSD’s CS department and, of course, some great research going on, too.

Today, I had a truly enjoyable (and eye-opening) meeting with Mary Beebe, the director of UCSD’s Stuart Art Collection. My purpose in meeting with Mary (who is an incredibly charming person and an obviously effective and strong-willed administrator) was to learn more about public art and the possibilities for our new Gates Center building, and maybe even for the whole campus. Again, I learned a tremendous amount about public art in a university context, ranging from fundraising to university policy to the selection process itself — all topics for a future article on this blog. Stay tuned…
