Just brought to my attention by Lenore Blum: Brady Forrest on O’Reilly Radar has an interesting report on the use of reCAPTCHA. To quote:
“…I am glad we are using them and recommend them wholeheartedly.”

MSNBC has just done a nice story on the Cascades Project. You may remember that I wrote about this back in November. Nice to see the project getting some wider press attention now. A direct link to the project site is at http://www.blogcascades.org/.

Annual Teaching Meeting
Peter Lee @ January 25, 2008 # No Comment Yet
Today we (in the School of Computer Science) had our annual Teaching Meeting. This is a tradition that I’m particularly proud of, and not only because I (jointly with Jeannette Wing) started it about 7 or 8 years ago (though that doesn’t hurt ;-), but because it is a great demonstration of the commitment of […]

Randy Pausch Piece on “OnQ Magazine”
Peter Lee @ January 25, 2008 # 2 Comments
Earlier this week, WQED television (the local PBS affiliate) did a 30-minute segment on Randy Pausch. Of course there have been a lot of these, but this one was unique in focusing on the impact of Randy on CMU (and vice versa), as well as early influences on his life. I thought the journalist, Mike […]

A “Computing Futures” Blog?
Peter Lee @ January 22, 2008 # 3 Comments
I didn’t really understand blogs. I first started this blog to communicate to the members of the CMU Computer Science Department. But in time, as the number of external readers became more obvious, I realized that a blog could be an important way to communicate ideas and points of view.
Because of this experience, I’ve […]

Peter Lee @ January 21, 2008 # No Comment Yet
Well, my third article today. As you can see, I am just emerging from a fairly hectic week, typical of what happens after returning from a two-week trip.

Today is Martin Luther King Day, and like almost every university in the nation, Carnegie Mellon has a full slate of celebratory activities on campus and in the local community. During Jared Cohon’s tenure as President, CMU’s approach to MLK Day has been unique. For one thing, classes remain in session for the morning, in […]

Boy, am I jetlagged!
After spending the New Year’s Day celebrations in Tokyo with my wife and son, I flew to Taipei for a conference. I just flew back to the USA today, landing this morning in Seattle and then immediately going to Microsoft Research for a series of meetings starting at noon. Whew!
The conference […]

KAUST Update
Peter Lee @ January 1, 2008 # No Comment Yet
Recall my October 12, 2007 article about the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, or KAUST. While I did not publicly reveal the details of our response to KAUST’s call for proposals, we did in fact submit a preproposal for a KAUST research center. (A bit more detail is available here, if you have […]
