Great Architecture or a Moldy Mess?

News

If you’ve been to MIT’s still-relatively-new Stata Center, you’ve probably been impressed with the uniqueness of its design. Despite a lot of obvious problems, I’ve always liked it and have found that spending time in the building is a memorable experience. Unfortunately, it appears that visiting the building is better than living in it. The Boston Globe reported today that a lawsuit has been filed by MIT against the design architect, Frank Gehry, for design flaws leading to persistent leaks and mold. It looks like some parts of the building will have to be redesigned.

It’s impossible to read about this and not think about our own building project, the SCS Complex (which includes the Gates Center and new Computing Quad). Our building will be smaller and simpler in design, but like Stata the Gates Center has some unique design elements and will be a major connector between the main and western parts of campus. In terms of function and overall design, it is perhaps the most ambitious building project the campus has ever undertaken. So, realistically, we should probably expect to have some “bugs” turn up after we move in.

Being an optimist, I’m not expecting anything serious. Guy Blelloch and the design team have been absolutely meticulous throughout the entire development process. I love the design and the approach taken by the architects and can hardly wait until we can move in. Probably some time in mid or late 2009.

[Thanks to Dave Andersen for pointing out the Boston Globe article.]
